Tutorial: Getting Connected (ebentley)

Tutorial

This animated tutorial guides you through the process of installing the P2K drivers on your computer so you can connect to your handset.

Remember, there is a strongly suggested order for loading your modding tools and that load order is this:

  • Motorola Phone Tools version 4.2.1a (installs the USB modem for your handset)
  • P2K Commander v3.3 or P2K Manager or Moto4Lin (File Managers)
  • P2K 2.9 Drivers (a seperate process if you're updating these drivers)
  • RSD Lite versions 2.6, or 2.7, or 2.8 (NOT 2.5-it is buggy) (Flash/Flexing Tool
  • Leader GL Flex Editor 10.5 XP (Good all around Flex/SEEM manager/editor)
  • Skinner4Moto & V3x S4M Module (Skin manipulation and uploading)

If you have subsequent issues with the P2K drivers, see my tutorial on P2K driver troubleshooting below.

Tutorial: P2K Driver Troubleshooter (ebentley)

Here's a tutorial on how to troubleshoot P2K driver installation problems.  It uses the "update driver" feature of the Windows Device Manager to "clean up" any driver installation problems.

Update11 August 2006New Method for Installing P2K Drivers (Cash7c3) [http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/Stu/cdigiamo/tutorial/v220/rev.html]

P2k driver installation has always been a pain - often involving searching Google for warez.  Now, there is a much simpler method - go to Motodev downloads page and download the bottom file titled" UID, KDWP and JAL Enabler Tool for Motorola OS Products Version 2.0

  • Extract the install file from the .zip file
  • Follow the installation instructions here
  • Start from section 3.2 for the software install instructions and section 4.2 for the driver installation
This works on Windows XP and 2000

Tutorial & Checklist: Troubleshooting USB Connection Issues (ebentley)
This is not intended to be a MS Windows XP class but some of you are experiencing some issues with "USB Device Not Recognized" messages when you try to connect yout handsets to your computer.  Well, here's short checklist that might help you isolate your specific problem.  The trick is to try to connect your handset after you've accomplished each step of the checklist.  Good Luck!  You can get the checklist here or from the download icon below. Tutorial: How to Quickly Change SIM Card PIN Code, & PUK Code

PIN-PUK CodesAlthough most people remember their primary SIM PIN code, those other codes - used for various verification purposes - are never to be found when needed. Below we've provided a set of short codes which, when entered on a handset's standby/main screen, will let you easily change PIN and PUK (short for Pin Unlock Code) codes - but keep in mind, they may not work with all handsets and mobile operators but they do work on Moto phones.   More importantly, if you change your PUK code, the Customer Care center/mobile operator won't be able to help you if the new codes are forgotten, so make sure to write any changes down alongside the old PUK codes.

If you fat-finger your PIN too many times, you will lock the SIM card and you won't be able to make calls other than emergency numbers or receive calls.  Your phone will tell you to to enter the PUK code before you can operate the phone again.  YOU WILL have to contact your cellular provider's customer care center to get your PUK code.  Also, please note that the codes provided below must be entered without the spaces shown below.

  • Change SIM Card PIN:  ** 04 * old PIN * new PIN * new PIN #  [Normally 4 digits]
  • Change SIM Card PIN 2 (Write down the new code):  ** 042 * old PIN * new PIN * new PIN #  [Normally 4 digits]
  • Change SIM Card PUK (Write down the new code):  ** 05 * old PUK * new PUK * new PUK #  [Typically 8 digits]
  • Change SIM Card PUK 2 (Write down the new code):  ** 052 * old PUK * new PUK * new PUK # [Typically 8 digits]
  • Display Handset IMEI :  *# 06 #

Discussion on PUK Codes:

Question:   Exactly what is a PUK Code?

AnswerA PUK code is a specific code associated with the SIM card. If your phone is asking you to enter the PUK code, STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! Call your Customer Care center (Cingular customer care at 800.331.0500) from another phone, and they can give you the correct code. If you enter in the incorrect code three times, you will fry your SIM card and have to purchase a new one. SIM card will cost you ~$25, and you will lose any information that you have on your current SIM.

You may hear  that PUK codes change periodically.  I've seen people say they had to call to get the PUK code on two different occasions for the same SIM card and it was different.  I've only had to get a PUK code once so I can't confirm this.  Others say theirs haven't changed in over 3 years.  Well, one good suggestion I've seen in my research on this subject is to write your PUK code on the back of your SIM card so its always with you.

Tutorial: V3x Flashing, Flexing, & Unbranding Your V3x

A quick tutorial on how to flash, reflash, flex, apply new DRMs, and generally unbrand your V3x.  Note that flashing a Monster Pack will erase all user data (phonebook, customized mods like Hacked SEEM edits, photos, ringtones, etc.  Reflashes generally allow you to update your phone to take advantage of new enhancements while keeping your user data as described above.

Note of Caution:  If your phone is Unlocked you will need to flash your phone with an Unlocked firmware, i.e., MP.  Flashing with a locked firmware will lock your phone and you will have to $pay$ to get it unlocked.  So, here’s the rule of thumb:

IMPORTANT RULE:

  • If you have a Locked phone -> you can use locked and unlocked Firmware.  Using unlocked firmware WILL NOT unlock a locked phone.
  • If you have an Unlocked phone -> you can only use unlocked firmware, because if you use locked firmware on an unlocked phone your phone will be locked again to the locked network firmware.  Then you will have to $$pay$$ to get it unlocked.

Tutorial: How to Create a F&B3 Backup (ebentley)

Well, now that we have Flash & Backup Version 3.0.053 primarily working with the V3x, we can finally create and restore automated backups. Here's a short tutorial I created on how to create a backup.  I'll create the "Restore a Backup" tutorial shortly.  Assumption:  You can successfully connect your phone and F&B3.  Download the animated tutorial below or here.

Update: Saturday, September 02, 2006 :  How to Backup CG1, BOOT Sector and PDS Using Flash & Backup 3.0.053 (vjason_mirell)

Do this:  Open the “Profile” directory (where you've installed FlashBackup—something like:  c:/Flash&Backup3/profiles), find the V3x profile (R252211LD_V3x.prof) ,back it up. Open the file with Notepad or whatever editor. Then you will see the addresses of the code groups including CG1, boot and PDS.   But before each of the PDS, Boot and CG1 entries, there is a ";" semi-colon, just remove it from each entry, save the file and restart Flash & Backup.    Now in the profile section you will have two profiles with the name Motorola V3x. one of them is the original one (from the backup file if it is in the same directory) and one is the one you've modified. You will also see the BOOT, PDS, and CG1 entries that are now selectable for backup in the F&B3 main screen and you can now back up everything from the V3x including CG1 and the BOOT Section and the PDS.  You can see the "before mod" and "after mod" conditions of the profile file below and remember, the PDS is specific to each phone so if you have more than one V3x, make sure you know which backup applies to which phone:

Earl's Comment:  I suggest you make two backups, (1) a FULL backup that inlcudes the BOOT, PDS, and CG1 entries, and (2) a PARTIAL backup with everything except the BOOT, PDS, and CG1 entries.  I would only use the FULL backup in cases of extreme emergency, i.e., a last ditch effort to try to recover the phone with most of my mods intact.  This would be one step prior to flashing a Monster Pack and then re-personalizing the phone again.  And, just so you know, I'm hearing that F&B3 has some limitations in reading the PDS so I'm just letting you know so you can make some informed decisions.

Tutorial: How to Enable your Java App Loader with P2KTools
  • Some of our users are having problems enabling their Java App Loader without "manually" SEEM editing.  Here is a way to do that using P2KTools.  Now, I know P2kTools is not totally interactive with our V3x(s), but it does work with the Java functionality.
  • Note:  I did say without “manually” SEEM editing but really what’s happening is that P2KTools is doing the SEEM editing behind the scenes.  This is the SEEM it is affecting: 0032_0001:  offset 43 - bit 0: (1 on, 0 off).  This either enables or disables the Settings>Java Settings>Java App Loader menu item on your handset
  • Heres a tutorial on how to enable your Java App Loader using P2KTools in MS Word  format and an executable FLASH  format- just unzip the archive and double-click on the file name.

Note:  You can also use the latest version of MotoMIDlets Manager v0.62.1YEAR to enable your java app loader as an alternative tool/method

Tutorial: How to Upload Java Applications/Games
Here is tutorial describing how to upload Java applications/games using MIDway 2.8.  The downloadable .zip file contains the MS Word version of the tutorial that describes the complete linear proces that starts with your initial actions taken on the handset; progresses to the steps you take with MIDway; then completes the uploading process with your final actions on the handset.  The animated Flash version only demonstrates the steps taken with MIDway, though it summarizes the complete process on the first screenshot.  It has a player bar that enables the viewer to start, pause, stop, the animation as often as you need to. This is Rasputin007's Skinning Guide. Everything from skin development to Skin Re-sizing.  Update:  Rasputin007 has provided new mma_ucp &mma_dcp files that display 16 icons on the main menu and includes a sub menu.  This allows the display of the icons in icon view instead of list view (default when you have more than 12 icons.  RE: 4x4 (16 icon) V3x skin by rasputin007.  Read the "Read-Me-First.txt" file and everything becomes clearer.  A16 icon skin will only display 16 icons if the mma is supporting it.  "Normal" 12 icon skins still work with 16mma, 12th icon is blank and is called "Extra", when selected 5 more icons open. 11+5=16.  Read the Motomodders.net thread here:  http://www.motomodders.net/Default.aspx?tabid=55&view=topic&postid=224967&ptarget=227100 Download rasputin007-skinning.doc

Tutorial: Changing/Deleting/Unlocking Web Sessions

Sometimes you will want to make changes to your web session settings but you can’t because the “edit” or “delete”: options do not display on your menu when you select a particular web session profile.  This is typical on branded phones and it means that the web session is locked (prevents you from editing or deleting the file).  This tutorial will show you how to unlock.  BTW:  Here’s the tools you'll need to unlock/delete the file:  RSD Lite and LeaderGL Flex Editor 10.5XP.

Note: (WARNING) If you delete your websession file, you WILL NOT be able to access the Internet. You need to have a web session profile on your phone to do this.  If you're not familiar with Leader GL Flex Editor 10.5XP, you can copy and delete  the web session file (not unlock) on your handset using these file managers as well:

How to Boost V3x Audio

In order to boost your audio gain for things like ringtones and ObeyMoto, upload this sound boosting file to a/system.  http://www.filelodge.com/files/room31/857629/Soundboot-file-2audio_cfg.zip.  Be sure to backup your original file to your hard drive before you replace this file on your phone just in case you want to revert to the original gain settings. This file does not affect Bluetooth volumes though so don’t expect any changes in that area.

Modify Your Own audio_cfg.db file! [monica_69]

I noticed that when I used the Sound Boost file to increase the volume on my VX3, the volume was a bit too loud and I was afraid to accidentally fry the external speaker one day.  So I searched for a way to edit the audio_cfg.db file in Hex Editor.

This is what I found on another forum (can't remember where...sorry), I tested it and set mine for "3" which is plenty loud enough! Note:  Estimated time for mod:  5 minutes

  1. Locate your original audio_cfg.db file on your phone in the a/mobile/system directory and download it to your hard drive using P2K Commander
  2. Back it up first before you do the next steps!!
  3. Open the copy of the audio_cfg.db file in your favorite Hex Editor such as XVI32
  4. Go to Offset 3A5 (Menu>Address>go to = Type in the value “3A5”.  XVI32 will place you in the highlighted 3A5 offset.  it should have the default value of 01
  5. Change that value per your choice between 02 to 06 (I chose 03). Just type right in the box. No BIT Manipulation is required for this mod.
  6. Save the file
  7. Copy it back to the phone’s a/mobile/system directory using P2K Commander
  8. Restart the phone and set the volume levels as you like again (Settings>Ring Styles>???Detail>Ring Volume = 1 – 7)

 So put simply, you:

  1. Download the audio_cfg.db file from a/mobile/system directory on your phone using P2K Commander and save a copy of it somewhere safe
  2. Edit the copy of the audio file using XVI32 Hex editor and save it
  3. Upload the modded file to your phone's a/mobile/system directory
  4. Restart your phone using the restart button in P2K Commander
  5. Set your volume levels (Settings>Ring Styles>???Detail>Ring Volume = 1 – 7)

Hope this helps, worked for me !  To view the complete thread and reply, please visit:

Download your audio_cfg.db, then back it up before you make these mods.

  • offset 3A5 : external speakers ringer and playback volume
  • offset 1B9 : earpiece volume
  • offset 1F8 : low battery sound and the left volume up/down keypress indicator (00 removes the sound)
  • also offset 1DD changes the volume of something (maybe you can try to find out what).

Tutorial: Editing your home, soft and menu keys via MMA Converter guide (Samnahata)

I did a quick search but couldn't find this great software posted on this forum, so i've decided to post it up here along with a lil tutorial.

I've noticed there are still a few out there that don't know to customize their home and menu keys. This lil software i found at Handy-Faq.de would help y'all if that is what you're after.

MMA converter is to be used with P2K menu editor. So make sure you download that off this forum or else the converter would be of no use.

10 Steps:

1) Download and backup your mma_ucp using your fav. file manager (P2k Commander, for example). The mma_ucp file is located at /a/mobile/system/.
2) Open up MMA Convert with Branding.
3) Hit the open mma_ucp button.
4) Locate your mma.
5) Hit convert.
6) Then use the converted file with p2k menu editor. (For those that don't know how to use p2k menu editor, there are numerous guide on this forum as p2k menu editor is used with other phones like the v3 as well) So make sure you do a search.)
7) Save your edited mma file after you're done with p2k menu editor.
8) Upload it back to your phone using your fav. file manager.
9) Restart your phone.
10) Smile!

Google for: (1) MMA Convert, (2) P2K Menu Editor, version 2.3 by MaX WiZ

And thats it guys. I hope this has helped y'all. Remember, i did not create nor copy this software off anyone (or anything).
Happy Modding!
